Showtime has ordered a shortened season to conclude the drama.
July 30, 2012
At Showtime's TCA panel earlier today, the network announced that The Big C has been renewed for a final season, which will be the show's fourth.
Four hour-long episodes will conclude the series, which is expected to return in 2013 although no concrete details have been confirmed at this time.
UPDATE (Nov. 8, 2012): Showtime has announced that the four-part conclusion will be considered part of the show's third season - not a fourth season as previously reported.
The last 4 eps _are_ being considered as season 4, according to SHO: http://www.sho.com/sho/the-big-c/season/4#/index

I really enjoyed this show, did not like the third season as much as first two. I am not surprised they are ending it. To keep it going for years with her condition would not be realistic.

This is an excellent show, with fine actors, a wicked sense of humor, and good direction. It is, however; one of those story lines not meant to go on forever, so I am happy that the show will go out while it still retains the high quality of the past seasons.
