The drama ends after one season.
August 7, 2014
ABC announced today that summer series Black Box has been cancelled after one season. The mental illness drama aired 13 episodes between April and July but struggled to draw significant viewership over the course of its run. Its premiere episode garnered a healthy 1.5 in the adults 18-49 demographic, but numbers fell to less than half that by the time its finale aired.

To those of you who have backed up my thoughts about this showed being important and needed, THANK YOU, your heads are obviously not in the sand about this horrendous disease that needs massive public awareness. You are amoung the very few who are not selfish and understand reality. To TATER JIM, there are absolutely NO overreactions in any of my posts. I have to assume that you yourself are not plagued with any of the multiple depressive illnesses, and also have no one close to you that is. With that in mind, sure "over react" would be what you see and that is understandable. This illness NEEDS public attention and education. When you know about any illness, you are better equipped to help someone who may need you. Sufferers rarely see the onset of symptoms when they start a new cycle of the negativity, this illness creates. Family and friends DO when they know what those symptoms look like, and treatment can be sought BEFORE those symptoms become too overpowering. Robin Williams... Need I say more!! NOW after the fact the people around him most are saying he was in a cycle of Major Depression. WHY if they knew that, did they not do anything to reverse the outcome?? I know people started this illness as kids and grew up thinking the symptoms were "normal" until they had major breakdowns so sever as adults they had to be hospitalized, followed up with months of rehab just to learn to live with the medication. It changes who you thought you were, your mind isn't as creative as it used to be, and it's is really hard to reinvent yourself as an adult, hence MANY people just go off their meds to be who they are used to being. Blackbox showed that dynamic many times, and also followed it up with the extremely dangerous cycle of mania that follows. If you have never exprienced someone who is a sufferer, you can't understand the very thin like that is lived daily, sometimes even moment to moment after diagnosis. Choice... To be a healthier and less symptomatic person ON the meds, or the symptomatic person who you know better, but suffering OFF the meds??? Believe me, there is more to the word "sufferer" than just the illness itself. I feel this show allowed those who are not getting help to see that they are not "crazy" or alone. Maybe it would even give them the courage to seek a group meeting to meet others and talk, etc. So YES I am bummed the show went off. I have worked with these issues for over 17 years now so I am not over reacting, or exagerating the facts. Oh and Cancer CAN be cured. I have been a part of that adventure too. 49yo woman with a grapefruit sized tumor in her lung (also had emphzema, broncial problems, and smoked, so removal of the lung would have left her only 10% lung capacity. Given 3-4 months the day she was diagnosed. We simply got her body healthy and it actually fought off the cancer. She was cancer FREE, per a very popular Cancer Hospital in CA, in only 7 months. MD's were shocked when asked to x-ray her again. There was only a lite shadow left where the Cancer once was, which healed over time, and we had grins from ear to ear. Again everyone, thanks for reading thru this. Peace and Good Health to you all.

Come on...this is an amazing show that I only happen to stumble upon. I don't care how much the network wants to say they spent on advertising, I never saw one. I was simply channel surfing and found it...it was maybe the 3rd or 4th episode, I remember that night I found it and because I had time and I went back and watched the first ones on demand...I was hooked. But there goes network tv not giving anything a chance. This is why the best tv is found on HBO and other cable networks, and now Netflix and the like. Maybe an outlet like Netflix with see the value of this great show and pick it up. Network TV really needs to rethink their practices. I think simple "ratings" are not the way to measure a shows popularity anymore. Do ratings allow for people who are watching shows on demand, on the Internet, etc? When the test doesn't return the type of data you are seeking, it's time to change the test to more accurately reflect what is truth.

I agree with others who have posted-- I'm over network TV. The new fall line up from ABC looks terrible; I'm not interested in anything I've seen promos for.
The few shows that I genuinely like they cancel without giving a fair shot.
Sorry ABC- I used to be a loyal viewer. But I'm done.

Final straw abc, CBS and NBC! I've had it with network TV. Won't watch any new shows until season 2 starts. Thank goodness for the DVR--I'm guessing I'm not alone--record a whole season and wait to see if the show makes it--sick of wasting my time on shows that get cancelled! Realty TV has ruined television.

Sorry. I misspelled the word "your" in my last message.

bub, you are seriously unbalanced if you TRULY believe that "Black Box" was a COP show! Black Box was a facility that catered to people with neurological and psychological problems. And the people that worked there were NEURO-surgeons and psychiatrists that helped people with their disorders and illnesses. How the HELL is that a COP show? Obviously YOU'RE the moronic viewer because you're thought process is for SH*T! Idiot.

Was this show any good? I don't know because I don't watch anything until it's picked up for Season 2 (or beyond). I know I'm not alone in that policy. So network execs, hope you're happy. Your quick axes have made it VERY hard for anything new to get off the ground. :(

Way to overact there Ellie. This bad show wasn't going to cure cancer.

Tried to like this show, but after the first two episodes, just couldn't get into it. Not surprised to find it cancelled finally
