The once-dominant series will end in 2015-2016.
May 11, 2015
Fox announced today that American Idol will be ending its run after Season 15. The singing competition changed the television landscape after its 2002 premiere, becoming a flagship series for the network and dominating in the ratings for most of its years on the air. It re-invigorated the popularity of prime time talent competitions, resulting in countless attempts by other networks - including Fox itself - to duplicate its success. Most failed to make a similar impact, while others - namely NBC's The Voice - have overtaken Idol and continue to draw strong ratings.
Only Ryan Seacrest remains as a recognizable face from the early days of the show. The inital judging panel of Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul have long since departed, leaving a revolving door of judges that have failed to resonate with viewers the same way the first three did. The current panel of judges - Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez, and Keith Urban - will be returning for the 15th and final season.

After they ruined the best part of the season I stopped watching. The horrible singers trying to make the cut at the first of the season was the only time I watched. Then they started showing more of the good than the bad and I lost all interest. Buh By!

The ever increasing flaw with this show's basic premise, is that you cannot FORCE a music-idol on the American public. This is why more of the shows 'winners' fizzled out, rather than making it in the music industry. As a music lover, I, myself, choose the artists and bands that I like. In the real world, Singer/Songwriters slowly climb to fame based on their talents and accomplishments. You cannot 'declare' or 'appoint' someone the title of mega-star songwriter, and expect the music-buying population to 'obey', simply because you said so. I'm surprised it has taken the show's creators 15 seasons to realize that. The American public figured it out by the 4th or 5th season.

American Idol is still on? Oh a show you could never "win." Even the first year "winner", as good a she is, is still branded American Idol winner. For the rest of time these people will have that turkey hanging around their necks.
