Amazon announced today that Transparent has been renewed for a fifth season. The pickup comes a month ahead of the veteran dramedy's fourth-season release, which is scheduled for Friday, September 22.

The series has continued to draw critical acclaim throughout its run, with star Jeffrey Tambor winning back-to-back Emmy Awards for lead actor in a comedy series. He is up for that award again this year to go along with the show's six other nominations across various categories.

Transparent stars Tambor as Maura, who previously spent the bulk of her life as Mort, the patriarch of the Pfefferman family. After reintroducing herself to her family, everybody's secrets slowly start to come out and family members each deal with the news in different ways as they figure out who they are going to become.

Production on Season 5 is slated to begin in 2018 for a likely premiere on Amazon Prime later that year. Creator Jill Soloway will remain at the helm going forward, with the main cast all returning as well.
