Netflix has announced that Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return will be coming back for a second season. The news was made official during the show's 12-hour Thanksgiving holiday marathon as a breaking news announcement.

A cult classic dating back to the 1980s, Mystery Science Theater 3000 had been off the air for 16 years before interest in the series was rekindled thanks to a Kickstarter campaign in 2015 that raised an impressive $5.7 million - the most-ever for a film and television crowdfunding effort. The series made its return earlier this year with 14 new episodes made available for streaming on Netflix.

Set in the not-too-distant future, the sci-fi comedy follows Jonah Heston, a hapless human who is forced to watch a selection of B-rated movies by mad scientists at the Gizmonic Institute. In order to maintain his sanity he watches the flicks with two robot companions, and they offer snarky commentary as the action unfolds on screen. Meanwhile, the scientists study the effects the films have on his brain.

There is no set time frame for the show's Season 2 return, but Netflix did state that Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return will be back in the "not-too-distant future."
