Showtime announced today that The Chi will be returning for a second season. The good news comes after a solid start for the freshman drama, which is averaging 4 million weekly viewers through its first four episodes.

Set in Chicago, the city of which it is named after, The Chi focuses on working-class residents within a south side community who become linked by coincidence but are bonded by the need for connection and redemption. It is a tough neighborhood, where there is real and constant danger, meaning even the simplest decisions can have life or death consequences.

The series was created by Lena Waithe, who is probably best-known for her work on Netflix comedy Master of None, of which she stars in and writes for. Waithe is coming off a notable year in her career, in which she became the first African-American woman to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.

Production on Season 2 of The Chi will begin later this year for a likely premiere in early 2019.
