Fox announced today that Empire has been picked up for a sixth season. The renewal further extends the impressive run of what is currently the network's #2 drama in both overall viewers and the coveted adults 18-49 demographic.
Given the show's continued solid performance, the pickup was a no-brainer for the now-independent network, which broke off from 21st Century Fox after it was acquired by Disney earlier this year. Now produced by Walt Disney Television, Empire will now be licensed to Fox going forward.
Empire burst onto the scene in 2015 with not only strong critical acclaim, but ratings that towered over its competition. Awards show recognition followed and it quickly became a flagship for the network. While its ratings have now pulled back to levels far from what they were in its heyday, the series remains a formidable prime time player.
Co-created by Lee Daniels, the series stars Terrence Howard as a hip hop mogul in an ever-changing power struggle with his ex-wife, played by Taraji P. Henson, for control over their family's entertainment dynasty. One cast member, Jussie Smollett, will not be returning for Season 6. Smollett was written out of the current season's final episodes after being involved in a controversy related to lying about an alleged racially-charged attack against him.
Look for Season 6 to return as part of Fox's 2019-2020 lineup this fall.

As so many have noted the moment the "entire cast" stood for Smollett after learning how he clearly faked a hate crime and wasted resources investigating a crime that never occurred yet benefited from his true crime getting a pass from the prosecutors office...that's when I stopped watching, and this was one of my favorite shows, but knowing they saw nothing wrong with what he attempted to do which could have sparked riots, retaliations and more....the Empire has crumbled....

This guy belongs in jail. He staged a double hate crime. He said it was white on black, they called him the "N" word and homophobic slurs. By the way that noose looked totally fake..lil' piece of twine. He stirred up so much hate and trouble in the community, plus he cost the police department a large amount of money on a bogus investigation. I have lost respect for the cast who signed the letter asking for his return. Please do not reward him with not only more salary, but more undeserved air time.

The reason why he isn't being prosecuted for filing a fake police report is 1) A corrupt system in Chicago, 2) Jusse has that protective pigmentation, and 3) Jusse has that protective sexual orientation.

The cast including Taraji Henson (who I previously thought highly of) and Terrence Howard have proclaimed their belief and support for Smollet and have pleaded to have him returned to the show, including this: “It’s clearer every day that the extreme political climate in our country has only made our system of justice and the court of public opinion more unjust.”
While the court of public opinion is often unjust, in this case, it’s only through the tolerance of the public that this show can now continue at all.

If Roseanne can get banned from TV and black balled in the show business because of a tweet she tweeted. Then "full -of-it" smullet should get that too and some more because what he did was 1000% worse.
