Netflix has confirmed that The Crown will be ending its story after its fifth season. The unexpected news arrives less than two months following the release of Season 3. While fans will still get two more seasons of the British royalty drama, the targeted conclusion does come earlier than originally expected.

Nothing was officially set in stone, but creator Peter Morgan had previously stated that he envisioned the series lasting for six seasons. With today's announcement, Morgan noted that working on the storyline for Season 5 gave him clarity that "this is the perfect time and place to stop".

The Crown takes an inside look at the early reign of Queen Elizabeth II, who at the age of 25 ascended the throne after the death of King George VI. From the 1940s to modern times, the biographical drama follows the romances, rivalries, and personal intrigues that occurred throughout the decades, helping shape the later years of the 20th century.
