A reality singing competition to find America's next singing superstar.

Hopeful contestants from across America audition in front of three celebrity judges in hopes of making the shortlist to sing for audience votes.

Once the top group of hopefuls are chosen, they sing in a selected genre each week, and the contestant with the lowest number of votes is sent home.

The eventual winner is crowned the "American Idol".
