Stephen Colbert will be the talk show's last host.
July 17, 2025
In a surprise move, CBS announced today that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will be ending in 2026. And with it, the 'Late Show' franchise is also being retired, ending the network's decades-long history of late night programming that began in 1993. Colbert informed his viewers of the move during Thursday night's broadcast.
"The Late Show With Stephen Colbert will end its historic run in May 2026 at the end of the broadcast season," said CBS executives in a statement. "We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire The Late Show franchise at that time. We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television. This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount."
While Colbert's current contract does end at the end of 2026, the timing of the cancellation does raise questions. It comes days after Colbert criticized Paramount Global's decision to settle a lawsuit by President Donald Trump for $16 million, with him calling it a "big fat bribe." There has also been recent speculation that Skydance Media, which is acquiring Paramount Global, may not agree with Colbert's views on the current political climate.
On the other hand, CBS has already been cutting back its late night programming. 'After Midnight' was recently cancelled after host Taylor Tomlinson decided to leave the show. The late night business in general has also been on the decline in recent years.

People have "woken" up to racists announcing them selfs with the word woke. Now they are trying to use TDS against anyone who tries to use the "media" to stand up to fascism. "WWII vets are just showing their TDS” When did we go from laughing at the extreme right to fighting to stop them from eroding our freedoms.
I guess the new benchmark for how American you are is how much the extremist hate you. They don’t want freedom of speech. If they don’t say something against you then you’re probably brainwashed.
Say something against me only if you hate freedom and the American way. It will help me know I’m correct in standing against them.

The show was losing forty million a year. they were looking for a excuse to fire him. He criticized them over Trump's lawsuit settlement. As for TDS which had nothing to do with this . How about TDS trump denial syndrome? , trump has been linked to throwing parties with Epstein alone and young girls to deny his long perverted relationship with Epstein is pathetic. Not a lib saying this either .

Well, guess we can see who the Trumpers are!. At least Colbert wasn't afraid to tell it like it is. Hope someone else picks up his talk show. He will be missed.

Why do we have to wait until next May? Just get rid of it now. Why does CBS want to lose another 20 million to kept this show on. This is one of the most unfunny guys on TV. He is a joke, but he must be smart to get the network to pay him as much as he gets. First Twitter fell now PBS and NPR and this Late Show poo poo. Lets get rid of Kimmel and Jimmy F and the world will be a better place. I forgot the View they need to go also.

As far as the President taking over the media - oh Noooo. The Media has had compassion for citizens, love of justice and freedom (which meant they voted for the decent party) for years. Stephen Colbert was not funny, in my book, on this show. David Letterman WAS funny! But then Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel are not funny either - they used to be less funny until they followed their Compassionate leaders and took to continually attacking Mr. Convicted Felon. “Tonight” with Jay Leno was great, but after he left the left it went more and more downhill. But Colbert is the worst - so much hate, venom and it was made very personal. So mad he got unconstitutionally attacked by a convicted felon! All three have completely lost extremist America.

Tried watching pre COVID and didn't care for it. He was not funny then and really not funny now. He was not on the same level of Carson, Letterman,Ferguson, or Leno. Just another reason not to pay him millions of dollars to polute a dying venue. Sorry not political, just a bad show.

About time. I tried to watch when Colbert first took over. Ugh unwatchable then. Then he started going political and one way, that made the show even worse. I couldn’t care less the reason for the cancellation. Just glad it’s over. Colbert can go to CNN and do his fake news.

It was a CBS and Paramount merger that evaluated profitability of this show. The cost of production was more than profit on all channels it was placed.
The show was extremely politically skewed targeting particular demographic. It wasn’t funny or interesting or special in itself. The host survived only by pushing political agenda and victimization and promoting political hatred.
Is show was profitable it would not be cancelled. It’s all about the money. Stop making it more than it is.
