A dramedy following a surgeon who leaves his career in Boston to move to a small fishing village.

Dr. Martin Best is a brilliant surgeon who abruptly leaves his illustrious career in Boston to become the general practitioner in a quaint East Coast fishing village where he spent summers as a child with his Aunt Sarah.

But Martin's blunt bedside manner rubs the locals the wrong way, and he quickly alienates the town. And while Martin can address any medical ailment or mystery, he's really just desperate to be left alone.

Instead, he keeps getting dragged into the middle of their personal chaos, feuds, and fantasies. What the locals don't know is that Martin's terse demeanor masks a debilitating new phobia and deep-seated psychological issues that prevent him from experiencing true intimacy with anyone. But tenacity is the creed of everyone in this small village, and the people who live there may be exactly what the doctor ordered.

I really wanted to like this show, BUT the townspeople in this show are so stupid and ignorant and irritating that its hard to watch! Josh Charles is the only one with a brain in his head and its so frustrating to watch!

I have never seen Doc Martin. After watching the first episode I thought it was a remake of northern exposure from 35 years ago. Doctor leaves big city to go to a small town and work with the eccentric locals. They have been remaking things for years. Who knows maybe Doc Martin is a remake of northern exposure. As long as it's a good cast with good writing it may last a few seasons

This is a poor attempt to copy Doc Martin and it fails miserably. Watch the original Doc Martin to see how it should be done. The American re-make will fail.

We like this show!! Who cares if it's similar to another show? Lots of shows are similar!! However, I do have one thing about the first episode that clearly was not researched properly: you can't tell someone has glaucoma just by simply looking at them! Eye tests need to be done for that diagnosis--specifically checking the eye pressure! I should know, I've had glaucoma for 39 years. Still, this show had me hooked in a few minutes. I hope it lasts many seasons!

And according to IMDb, this *is* a remake of Doc Martin, so of course it will be similar—as are many shows that are remakes of other shows.

There are several comparisons to Doc Martin, which I've never seen, but the show also sounds like it shares similarities with shows like Sullivan's Crossing and Hart of Dixie, both of which have had several seasons. There are plenty of television shows that are similar to other shows (Police procedurals, anyone? Many viewers see a lot of similarities between Friends & Big Bang Theory, etc.), so I don't think having similarities to another show is cause for writing something off. I've been a fan of Josh Charles since he played Knox Overstreet and I hope this show goes on for at least a few seasons. :)

I'll give it 3/4 of a season before it's yanked
