No Season 2 for the apocalyptic drama.
November 27, 2020
It is being reported that Amazon has cancelled Utopia after just one season. The sad news comes two months after the drama released its 8-episode freshman run, which ultimately received a mixed reception from critics.
Created by Gillian Flynn, the hour-long series follows a group of young adults that meet online who uncover a cult underground graphic novel that contains clues about world destruction and biological warfare. This makes them a target of a shadowy deep state organization, burdening them with the perilous task of not only saving themselves, but saving humanity and the world.

This show did not stand a chance. A show about a giant global conspiracy, pandemic and brutal violence. It had to carry all of that mid COVID and that before you deal with the quality.
The UK version is excellent. A vibrant, surreal, twisted, mix of conspiracy and violence. For me the visual style and unusual score gave the show a unique feel. The ultra-violence felt at home the this neon comic book. Unfortunately in this remake the grittier dark tone seem to make the violence much more real and in my opinion heavy handed.

The UK version was 100% the better one. The who gigantic cult thing ruined it. It wasn't that we're sick of pandemics -- it was that the Jeff Bezos/Elon Musk equivalent character could not reasonably be the head of a stupid conspiracy (John Cusack did was he could with what he had - but c'mon, man, no, not a good character). Having one character be the only cult member to "go off script" was inane... they literally told us not all the cult members were fully committed to keeping the secret, etc. with one character after spending a huge amount of time building up the group. The only part that was great was the art -- otherwise, UK version all the way -- and I agree with the other folks who say we need a completion of the story... preferably the UK version.

The Uk version was soooooooooooooooooooooo much better. I mean they killed off the hot girl in this one at what, episode 2 or was it 1?
While a similar story, I found the Amazon version VERY lacking in terms of compelling viewing. The way the episodes unfolded was a mixed bag and although I had seen the UK version so was familiar with the overall story, there wasn't really any driving "quest" in the Amazon series. At least not one which was overly engaging. Basically, the producers/director of the Amazon version did a pretty bad job of keeping a taught storyline throughout episodes. Not surprise it didn't make the cut.
Wish they'd revive the UK version for a 3rd season.

John Cusack hasn't been entertaining since 1985 so this can't be a surprise to anyone.
