No Season 3 for the spin-off comedy.
May 14, 2021
Word is out that ABC has cancelled Mixed-ish after two seasons. The news comes ahead of next week's sophomore finale, with the comedy's May 18 episode now set to serve as its series closer.
Today's cancellation coincides with the network announcing that franchise mothership 'Black-ish' will be ending after its eighth season. As for Mixed-ish, it started out as a decent performer in 2019 but has seen its viewership fall off quite a bit in Season 2.
A spin-off prequel of 'Black-ish', the half-hour series follows Rainbow Johnson looking back at her early years growing up in a mixed-race family in the 1980s, after her parents moved them from a hippie commune to the suburbs to provide a better life for their family. Bow and her siblings navigate a mainstream school in which they are not seen as black or white - leaving them with the constant dilemma of whether to assimilate or stay true to themselves.

No surprise here. So much potential. The show was supposed to be about rainbow growing up and the focus shifted towards the parents. The same mistake was made on fresh off the boat.

If you think white is a race you can be racist to it. If you truly think you can't be racist to it you are more uninformed than most. It is as if you don't see others as even human and are just prejudging based on race. That is the definition of the problem. Please don't be the problem.

You can’t be racist against “white people” that’s like being racist towards the devil, which white people are. (Not responding to anyone so STAY MAD)

I wanted to address a couple of other things about these Kenya Barris written and produced programs. Black-ish is about the total Johnson unit as a Black upper middle class family. The focus was never on Rainbow as a biracial child, but how the diverse backgrounds of the adults weaved together a shared Black culture and how they bring those awarenesses to their children. Mixed-ish gave us the back story of Rainbow Johnson and her siblings, whose beginnings were molded by life in a commune where their interracial existence was not an issue. How they navigate society outside the commune is the sum total of Rainbow’s story, and how she could ultimately meet and marry Andre Johnson, their upbringing different but affected by Civil Rights activism of their parents. Then there is Grown-ish, the story of Zoey. It is an American story of the quick transformation from childhood to young adulthood - high school to college years - on one’s own, making new friends and life changing decisions. None of these stories are about being “woke.” They are simply a glance into American lives.

I enjoyed this show. I’m sorry to see it go at a time when a better representation of American life is needed in scripted television.

There was no need for this show. Blackish pretty much covered Rainbow's biracial life. Any words on the other spinoff about Rainbows eldest daughter college life?

Another show with racist jokes against white people in the trash can.
