The film prequel series will return for Season 2.

HBO announced today that IT: Welcome to Derry has been renewed for a second season. Since its debut on HBO Max last October, the drama has ranked among the top four series premieres globally in the streamer's history.
"We are excited to return to the chilling world of Derry and to further expand on Andy and Barbara Muschietti's horrifically iconic adaptation," said Sarah Aubrey, Head of HBO Max Original Programming. "Together with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in season two, deepening the terror, the mystery, and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour."
"We know IT: WELCOME TO DERRY will continue to captivate viewers with its spine-tingling new journey into the 1930s for Season 2," said Clancy Collins White, President, Creative Affairs, Warner Bros. Television. "We look forward to bringing fans back to the town of Derry to experience the next chapter and uncover even more of what lies beneath the surface."

Set in the world of Stephen King's "IT" universe, the series expands the vision established by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the feature films "IT" and "IT Chapter Two." Season 2 will take place in 1935 during the Great Depression and center on the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammo and end up facing unimaginable horror.

another 8 hrs of making things up as they go along, sprinting further and further away from the book and contradicting their own films

I already forgot about this show until the renewal. I have to guess that because of that I doubt the new season will make a difference to me, but we will see.

I think this show could do well. Normally I abhor prequels. I don't like backstory when something is good. But this one can jump approximately 27-28 years in directions. This one sounds like it's the 1930's. I hope they don't try to build origins or traumatic moments and utilize the time frame they are in. I bet Pennywise could terrorize the mess out of kids and adults if he uses "early war gas mask elephant nose" garb. He could reference depression fears by manning a fruit and vegetable cart. He could dress dapper and hint at where the newest speak easy is.

Why did it take so long to renew season two? The first season was really good.

Not that's it's "renewed" for that far out, but I believe they are also planning a 3rd season that takes place around the 1910s.
