Tommy Gavin is a veteran fireman at the Ladder 62 / Engine 99 firehouse. Along with his troublesome family, they face issues with post-9/11 trauma and domestic problems.

Tommy struggles with the loss of his best friend Jimmy, who was a victim of the September 11, 2001 tragedy, and often visits Tommy in visions.
