The new comedy will not return for a second season.
June 23, 2017
ABC's new comedy Downward Dog has been cancelled. The network's decision comes six episodes into the show's run and just four days before its now-series finale. Co-creators Michael Killen and Samm Hodges broke the news on Twitter this afternoon, writing that the network, which was in support of the show creatively, could not find a way to justify a second season financially.
The half-hour series premiered last month and has been garnering decent ratings and generally-positive feedback from critics. But with the cast's options due to expire in the coming week, its numbers just weren't strong enough for the network to justify bringing the show back.
Downward Dog starred Allison Tolman as a woman attempting to deal with her tumultuous personal life and stressful career. Observing her daily struggles is her increasingly-lonely and philosophical dog Martin, who tells her story from a canine's uniquely unfiltered perspective.
Catch the show's two-part series finale this Tuesday, June 27.

I tried to watch the first episode but I couldn't watch after the first commercial break. I lost count of the word "like" being used so much it was so irritating to me. I thought it might be a cute show, and it might have been, but I would not know since I watched so little of it. Guess I was right.

No big surprise really. It was a cute concept and the dog was awesome, but its freshness aged in dog years. I loved Allison Tolman in Fargo and I'm sure she'll be back in another show.
It was a fun show for a season.

What a shame. We loved this show! Any dog owner will recognize so many things about this hilarious narration by Martin the dog. Wish they would give the show a chance.

What a shame! This show is hilarious. It is hard to believe that this network could not at least give it another full season before deciding the financial future! No wonder we're all watching Cable these days!

I though the premise of Martin the dog was fantastic... the Nan story.... not so much. Great idea kind of executed in a non-engaging manner.

I only checked this show out because Matt Roush talked it up in TV Guide, and I always seem to agree with him. I never did watch Imaginary Mary because, like DD, it sounded like such a stupid stretch. I never expected Downward Dog to get picked up, but I forced myself to keep watching because of that review. Shock of shocks - by the end of the 1st episode, I started to like it. I could never imagine that it would last more than 13 episodes and some of the dog's comments were repeated WAY to often, but I am glad I checked it out.
