The new comedy will not return for a second season.
June 23, 2017
ABC's new comedy Downward Dog has been cancelled. The network's decision comes six episodes into the show's run and just four days before its now-series finale. Co-creators Michael Killen and Samm Hodges broke the news on Twitter this afternoon, writing that the network, which was in support of the show creatively, could not find a way to justify a second season financially.
The half-hour series premiered last month and has been garnering decent ratings and generally-positive feedback from critics. But with the cast's options due to expire in the coming week, its numbers just weren't strong enough for the network to justify bringing the show back.
Downward Dog starred Allison Tolman as a woman attempting to deal with her tumultuous personal life and stressful career. Observing her daily struggles is her increasingly-lonely and philosophical dog Martin, who tells her story from a canine's uniquely unfiltered perspective.
Catch the show's two-part series finale this Tuesday, June 27.

When the Gong Show is back and stupid relationship and dating shows are on and Imaginary Mary is cancelled, something is wrong! Who's doing your programming! Bring back Mary and fine-tune Downward Dog. They could be winners.

What happens when the networks air an intellectual comedy? They cancel it and make room for more insipid or raunchy humor with no heart. Shame on you ABC.

Imaginary Mary and Downward Dog were my two must see new shows on ABC. Now they're cancelled without giving them time to be discovered. Please change your mind and renew them. It was so refreshing to see two new ideas. I'm sick of the same old stuff. Mary is simply adorable, except possibly for grouchy old men. I couldn't get enough of her. Her scenes were TOO SHORT. Pet owners and animal lovers will love Downward Dog! RENEW THEM!

Thank gawd, thank gawd, thank gawd. This was one of the most awful shows on TV. The sets were so badly furnished, the show might as well been shot in black and white. The sets were simply drab.
If the lead in the show, Nan, had even one shred of a personality, maybe the show could have lasted, but she was as drab as the set. There simply was no "brightness" in the show.....even the dog sounded drab.
If some producer had just taken one moment to lighten up things on this show, I don't know, like put in some hits of color somewhere, and found someone to "talk" for the dog with a voice a bit less drab, Downward Dog might not have been cancelled, I'm sure of it.

If the show was really good it would have started in the fall. Just late Spring filler.

This show seduced me away from cable. I wanted to give network TV a look again. Now I won't bother with network anymore as anything fresh hasn't a chance. Big mistake.

This was the funniest new show i've seen in a long time! As dog owners my whole family would audibly laugh at the dog's perspective on things! What a shame! Maybe it should be given a real chance, which doesn't include summer time!!!

Loved this show! Fun & funny & enjoyable way to spend a half hour. Nice to have something different & new! REALLY hope another network will see the jewel that this show is. Network didn't give this show more of a chance to find an audience. There are a lot of dog lovers out there!!!

This was a wonderful show but I am guessing it wasn't "Politically Correct" enough for the suits at ABC. Case in Point; deciding to keep an awful show like "Speechless" on the air and canceling Downward Dog! The dog should have had a bunch of scripted lines bashing Trump, I am sure that would have kept the show on the air.
