It looks like People of Earth will not be returning for its long-awaited third season after all. Series creator David Jenkins posted a message on Twitter letting his followers known that TBS has cancelled the alien abductee comedy, reversing its renewal from last fall.

The reason behind the cable network's change of heart is not known, though it is curious. The original decision on a third season came towards the end of Season 2, meaning TBS already had enough ratings information to assess whether a renewal was warranted. Also, writing for Season 3 is already complete, so significant work on the next season had been put in for quite some time.

People of Earth premiered in 2016 and got off to a strong start during its freshman run, ranking as one of the Top 10 new cable comedies of the year among adults 18-49. Viewership has dipped slightly during Season 2, but its numbers remained relatively close to the previous year.

The series follows a journalist who starts investigating an alien abductee support group. His initial skepticism subsides after digging deeper into their bizarre claims, to the point where he realizes that there may be evidence of his own alien abduction.
