Showtime is bringing us the next chapter of the dramatic thriller.
November 1, 2018
Showtime announced today that Penny Dreadful is heading back to TV in the form of a follow-up series called Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. The new installment will be set in 1938 and will usher in the story's next chapter with a newfound focus on social consciousness and historical awareness.
The original series premiered in 2014 and went on to air a total of three seasons on the cable network. Its sudden cancellation in the summer of 2016 took many fans by surprise when it was announced following its third-season finale. After a major character death during the 2-part conclusion, the words "The End" appeared on-screen to the shock of many.
Production on Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is set to kick off in 2019. The series will act as a spiritual descendant of its mother show with an all-new cast of characters in 1930s Los Angeles, which is filled with Mexican-American folklore and social tension rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil.

Yeah, you can sure make a story with those types of characters but tagging it with the Penny Dreadful name is just shameful. It's also pretty damn insulting. There's SO MANY original stories penned by great artists in early 20th century mexican-american culture. What, did they think that a series named and based on that cultural era couldn't stand on its own so they had to shoehorn in the Penny Dreadful tag to help it along? Ok I gotta stop writing, I'm getting mad.
aka social justice garbage.
I do kinda like the Mexican-American folklore aspect though with all their supernatural legends and such but with the above I just hope its not too "preachy" and focuses solely on the folklore.
But really what makes me more hesitant than having zero original cast is "social consciousness and historical awareness".
I DETEST entertainment that tries to "preach" to viewers. It seems some production houses feel they MUST try and tell viewers what to think or believe rather than merely entertain them. If it's "preachy" (liberal OR conservative) I won't watch it at all.
