No Season 2 for the Sean Penn drama.
January 18, 2019
It is being reported that Hulu has cancelled The First after just one season. The American-British co-production, which stars Sean Penn in his first regular TV series role, premiered last September with an eight-episode run that garnered decent reviews but ultimately generated little buzz.
Set in the near-future, the drama follows a crew of astronauts who are working towards becoming the first humans to set foot on Mars. With guidance from a visionary aerospace magnate, the astronauts face adversity and make personal sacrifices as they attempt the greatest pioneering feat in human history.

This show SUCKED MONKEY TESTICLES! I hate when people try and make sci-fi into stupid art-house, indi, movie/shows. It was stupid. It took a great concept and threw it in an art-house blender, then tried to feed it to audiences as steak. Sean Penn looked like a talking piece of leather with blood-hound droopy eyes. This guy needs to stop taking roids and stretching his skin farther and farther. Talking saddle-bag. Glad this is cancelled. Maybe people will stop making stupid shows in this idiotic styles and actually put some real thought and creativity into them?

I really enjoyed the show, although I didn't even think about there being a second season. I assumed it was a mini series.

Hey at least hulu is trying originals. They would have no customers and high fees if they only did network repeats. This stuff brings in viewers and helps keep the cost down. I mean look at Emmy Winning Handmaids Tale among others. Why not try new stuff. It works.

They needed to go to mars. That would have saved it.

@Nina -- I was very sad when the "Crazy Ones" was cancelled. I thought it had great story, jokes, and chemistry. I am not sure why the ratings were not there. I think we were getting to the time in TV history where people were tired of investing time into a show to only see it cancelled. People don't want to watch something that doesn't have some kind of ending.
@azentropy - "The First", I could not take past the first show. It was not what I expected either. Sean Penn wasn't enough for me to watch the show even though I didn't like it.
I still wish Hulu and Netflix would drop their prices and not spend on original content. I would love to know how much the original content affects the overall costs. I DO love being able to watch shows without commercials. (Yes, I splurge for the commercial free Hulu).

I bet Natasha McElhone is second guessing her decision to leave Designated Survivor..... Goes to show it doesn't matter the name value of the star when it comes to TV (Halle Berry - Extant, Robert deNiro did a pilot that didn't get picked up, Robin Williams - Crazy Ones, etc.) I wish someone would hold on to something with Hannah Ware though, Betrayal was a guilty pleasure of mine.

Figured as much. I tried watching it and quickly found it wasn't the type show I was expecting/wanting. Been sitting in the middle of the 3rd episode now since October and probably won't finish it now knowing it has been cancelled.

Well, that is disappointing...I just started watching it.
