Netflix announced today that The Last Kingdom has been picked up for a fifth season. The good news comes two and a half months after the release of Season 4, which was the historical drama's second on the streaming service since moving there from BBC Two in 2018.

Adapted from Bernard Cornwell's book series "The Saxon Stories", the show retells the history of King Alfred the Great and his desire to unite several kingdoms into what is now known as England. Young warrior Uhtred is on a mission to reclaim his birthright. Kidnapped by Norsemen and raised as one of their own, he is forced to choose between his ancestral kingdom and the people of his upbringing.

Season 5 of The Last Kingdom will use "The Warriors of the Storm" and "The Flame Bearer" novels as its source material. No timeframe for a return has been announced, but a mid-to-late 2021 release appears likely.
