The dark comedy is the latest show to have its renewal reversed.
October 7, 2020
It is being reported that On Becoming a God in Central Florida has been cancelled by Showtime after one season. The move makes the dark comedy the latest victim in the growing trend of renewals being reversed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that has affected all television shows in some manner.
The hour-long series premiered in the Fall of 2019, receiving an overall-positive critical reception that earned it a quick renewal just a month later. Unfortunately the coronavirus hit just when production on Season 2 would be kicking off, and the cable network ultimately decided to scrap the series, as it could not find a way to reunite the cast and crew despite their best efforts.
It appears no renewal is secure in 2020, as numerous TV shows have been cancelled after initial pickups months before. Just two days ago, GLOW was cancelled by Netflix ahead of its anticipated fourth and final season. Other shows to meet similar fates include The Society (Netflix), Drunk History (Comedy Central), Tosh.0 (Comedy Central), Stumptown (ABC), and I'm Sorry (TruTV).
Set in the 1990s, On Becoming a God in Central Florida stars Kirsten Dunst as Krystal Stubbs, an Orlando water park employee who lies, cheats, and cons her way up the ranks of Founders American Merchandise, which is the same cult-like, multibillion-dollar pyramid scheme that ruined her family in the first place. As she uses the scheme to make a better life for herself, Krystal realizes that her shady business venture is starting to affect those close to her.
