Nat Geo announced today that The Hot Zone has been picked up for a second season. The good news comes a year and a half after the drama wrapped its original run, which at the time was billed as a miniseries.

Season 1 of the show takes place in 1989, when the Ebola virus first appears in chimpanzees in a research lab in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. With no known cure, a US Army scientist risks her life to prevent an outbreak before it spreads to the human population.

Now an anthology, Season 2 will follow the anthrax attacks of 2001, and the hunt for the killer who terrorized the country in the days following the September 11 attacks.

Look for Season 2 of The Hot Zone in 2021.
