Hulu announced today that The Handmaid's Tale has been renewed for a sixth and final season. The news comes the week before the Season 5 premiere on September 14. Though the drama's ending has now been set, it appears the story may continue in another form. Creator Bruce Miller is currently developing a follow-up series called "The Testaments," which will pick up years later.
Based on the classic Margaret Atwood novel of the same name, The Handmaid's Tale takes place in a totalitarian society that was previously part of the United States. Elisabeth Moss plays Offred, one of the few remaining fertile women in the dystopia of Gilead. A handmaid in the commander's household, she is one of the caste of women who are forced into servitude in a desperate attempt to repopulate the world.
The show has been a huge success for the streaming service since its debut in 2017. It notably made Hulu the first streaming platform to win a Primetime Emmy Award when it took home the trophy for Outstanding Drama Series in its freshman year. Since then, the series has been the recipient of many other accolades including a combined 15 Emmy Awards and the prestigious Peabody Award.
We can't keep this a secret any longer. #TheHandmaidsTale will return for a 6th and final season on @hulu. ✊ pic.twitter.com/baVbYjgSdz
