Starz announced today that Outlander has been picked up for an eighth and final season. The news comes months ahead of the fantasy drama's seventh season, which will likely premiere sometime this summer. While an ending is now in sight, fans still have a total of 26 more episodes to look forward to before the show concludes its story; Season 7 has been extended to 16 episodes and Season 8 will consist of 10.
The hour-long series has been a strong performer in the cable network's lineup. Along with continued critical acclaim and a wide variety of award wins, Outlander has seen its audience grow over the course of its run.
"For nearly a decade 'Outlander' has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and we're pleased to bring Claire and Jamie's epic love story to a proper conclusion," said Kathryn Busby, President, Original Programming for Starz. "But before we close this chapter there is plenty of their passionate story to tell over the course of 26 new episodes and even more to explore of this dynamic world and its origin story. We're thrilled to continue to partner with Matthew, Maril and Ronald and can't wait to see where their alluring storytelling takes us next."
Filmed on location in Scotland, Outlander is adapted from Diana Gabaldon's International best-selling nine-book series.
