No Season 3 for the biographical Lakers drama.
September 17, 2023
Word is out that HBO has cancelled Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty after two seasons. The news comes on the heels of tonight's sophomore finale. Showrunner Max Borenstein took to Twitter to let fans know that the show's final episode was "not the ending that we had in mind."
Based on the book "Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s," the series follows the personal and professional lives of the Los Angeles Lakers, including the rise of basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson and the lengths one wealthy investor went to in pursuit of securing a basketball dynasty.
In the now-series finale, the Lakers were defeated by the Boston Celtics in the 1984 NBA Finals. But instead of the story continuing in Season 3, a montage at the end informed viewers that the Lakers went on to defeat the Celtics two of the next three years.

What's a Larry Bird? A bb player in drag? Must have been before my time.

Nope, wrong again. Although not young and dumb. Do you not know of Jerry West? All your baby Lakers sure did. Yours is the excuse progressives make about those who care about doping, as in: only the old care. Temporarily ignoring their own history of complaining about doping from other nations like China and Russia. Whatever works now for you, temp Dan. No history Dan, only comes with the smell.

Now Steve S.‘s constant complaints make sense. He’s like 70 and has seen the world pass him by.
Good to know.

It could well be that some wokester is responsible for many of the "woke go broke" comments, which should be easy enough to ignore. However, a random generation of that comment has a very good chance of being right. Woke comes in a lot of forms and if you don't see, you may be it. The Lakers and pro basketball - absolutely no interest. I watch one school's college bb - before they get to be unbearable big shots. I did like the Lakers through the Magic era but after that, it's like they don't exist. There was once a channel devoted entirely to the Lakers, year round, what a waste. Jerry West was my favorite, but only as a player. Don't need to see anything so much and beat it to a holey death.

I do not understand why Taz thinks this show is woke? Were Magic and Kareem white? This "WOKE" shit is getting old. Half the people that use this expression can not tell you what it means. Write a valid criticism. Not just WOKE.

Probably too expensive to produce. The way season two concluded led me to believe, that this was a limited run series anyway.

Too bad. I wish this could have been a limited series of different teams every year. I would have loved to see a Bad Boy Pistons or Chicago Bulls series.

This was a great show that's too bad. Was looking forward to the later 80s seasons and bringing MJ into the fold
Agreed with the Larry Bird actor too. He was spot on

Booo, this was a really good series. I wish they could have finished it off properly.

This show was okay but jumped around too much. It wasn't one season one season. It was like they wanted to show highlights of the Lakers run but not tell the story.
Also if you ever see the term "go woke go broke" it is just code for lesser minded people and trolls. They only put it shows they fear and know could help the world. So if you see it they are saying "this show respected good values and free and open dialogue, which I am against." It's a badge of honor and their backhanded way of recommending the show.
