NBC announced today that American Ninja Warrior is coming back for Season 16 - its 13th on the network. The veteran athletic competition has become a summer staple, garnering consistently-solid ratings that perform well against its time slot competition.
Based on the Japanese series 'Sasuke,' which has now aired 41 seasons, American Ninja Warrior began its stateside run in 2009 on the now-defunct cable channel G4 before moving to NBC in 2012.
The show closely mirrors the original Japanese format, featuring athletes from all walks of life taking on a series of extreme obstacle courses in city finals around the country. Those advancing move on to the national finals round in Las Vegas, which features a four-stage course that closely resembles Japan's well-known Mount Midoriyama course.
Season 16 of American Ninja Warrior premieres on Monday, June 3 at 8:00pm.

I can't say I like the new format. How many good ninjas would have finished the course if they weren't under the added pressure of running head to head with immediate elimination? As if the course isn't hard enough. Come on...
Then, in this year's finals, a ninja is interrupted during his run by the hosts, who make a comment that gets the contestant to stop, turn around to look at his wife (because of the comment), breaking his rhythm and focus, and losing valuable time on a brutal, TIMED stage 1. NOT their best moment; they should never interact with the contestants when the stakes are the highest. They should let him do the course again, but they probably won't. BIG thumbs down on that one guys.

The changes in last year's season left me cold. Head to head races as the way to narrow down the contestant pool in the earliest stages of the competition? Please no. If this upcoming season returns to the original format, hooray! I'll be sure to watch every episode. If it's like last season, it's a pass for me.

This season (S16) was actually filmed last year (2023), at the same time as S15. So while technically it was just "renewed", it was really renewed a year ago when it was filmed.

I honestly haven’t seen this show in probably 6 or 7 years. Nothing against it. Just surprised it’s still going.
