No Season 3 for the high school comedy.
November 12, 2025
It is being reported by Deadline that English Teacher has been cancelled by FX after two seasons. The news comes less than two months after the comedy wrapped its sophomore run, which garnered the same high praise as the first season.
The half-hour series follows Evan Marquez, a teacher at Morrison-Hensley High who wants to be a principled person but usually runs into trouble because of it. He and his colleagues Gwen, Markie, Rick, and Grant navigate the ups and downs of teaching the students of today.

Too bad. This was easily one of the best sitcoms in years. When I thought of this series, I thought of it as subversive. With an openly gay teacher living his life as the main character, you might have expected the poster child for woke but if anything it was post-woke. This was not a Hollywood factory show spewing the company line like "Abbott Elementary" does.
Did the series show too much of Evan's private life? Probably too much for a lot of people, but it didn't spend any more minutes on Evan's private life than other sitcoms do with their main characters. Most episodes his boyfriend wasn't even there. This was a work comedy. But Evan is a single gay man and at this point in his life he certainly isn't Mitchell or Cameron from "Modern Family".
Just as an example, one episode this year was about the high school kids putting on a play with Evan as the director. Evan wants to do "Angels in America" because of course it means a lot to him. If this was a typical Hollywood sitcom, that would be the play. But no, the kids rebel and want to put on a play about their Covid experiences. Why? Not because they're anti-gay (this being 2025 some of the kids are openly gay), but because that was 40 years ago. It doesn't impact their life. And anybody who's honest will realize that's the truth.
Ultimately this show managed to offend just about everyone. On the surface it had a cynical streak, but deep down there was a lot of affection for the characters, who just wanted to get by and live their lives without having to make a statement. I am surprised that it made it two years. But I hope that in the future it will be seen like "Freaks and Geeks", a show that was written off when it first aired but later came to be seen as a classic.

Networks cannot seem to stand a smartly written comedy. Much less one with such amazing casting.
Good show always equals getting canceled these days.
Sad to see it go.

We watched the first four. While I liked it for the most part, the overt sexuality just was not what we were looking for.

I liked it. Looks like we’re just back to the same old reality, influencer, Junk.

These comments are embarrassing. Clearly people didn’t watch the show and are here to say “GO WOKE GO BROKE” to feel like the won the internet.
Great show, sad to see it go.

Agree with both Jasmine and Yep--many of us have gay family members/close friends but yes, it should have stayed in the classroom and not focus on the sexuality aspect of it. Why is that even necessary? It's an overexposure. How about just a plain old 30-minute comedy about about quirky teachers and staff--wait--Abbott Elementary! One character is gay, but it's not gratuitous--it's a brilliantly written show. English Teacher could have been a real hit because the characters were very funny, but it was in your face.

The show was actually rather boring and pedestrian. I think someone though they fact that the main character was gay would be enough to carry the show. Just because a character as written gay that NEVEr automatically makes it a good character. Ya kinda STILL gotta write a good story.

Is anyone surprised? We are done as a society with this gay overexposure. They are a minority that is more represented than the actual demographic, they just had to focus of the human interaction without putting "sexuality" front and center.

I liked it. Funny cast. Quick episodes. Kill a half hour and laugh. Too bad. The coach evolved in season 2. Gwen is sexy as hell. Enrico Colantoni was awesome as the principal, Grant. I have gay friends and a cousin. That being said, the show should have stayed in school and not focused so much on the main character's sexuality. The interactions between teachers and students and teachers and other teachers was the draw.
