A drama following a world-renowned neuroscientist struggling with her own mental illness.
Catherine Black is a well-known neuroscientist who secretly struggles with bipolar disorder. The only other person who knows about her illness is her psychiatrist, who was at Catherine's side after her first break and acts as her maternal figure since her mother committed suicide after struggling with the same disease.
Catherine, along with her staff at The Cube, work to diagnose and treat challenging cases of patients with rare conditions.

I'm a neurologist. Black Box is so far removed from reality, so offensive, and so insulting that I wouldn't be overly surprised if the people behind it got death threats. All of you who have the peculiar delusion that this show has any semblance of realism at all are completely, utterly, hopelessly, outrageously wrong. You want realism? Go watch Gilligan's Island. That bears more resemblance to what life would be like for people shipwrecked on an uncharted desert isle than Black Box bears to modern medicine. And no, I am NOT exaggerating. The difference is that Gilligan's Island was SUPPOSED to be farcical and imbecilic. And I thought GREY'S ANATOMY was a fanciful show! Compared to Black Box, Grey's Anatomy looks like a documentary.

As a mental health sufferer this show is far from accurate. They only show the worst of symptoms and show that to survive with a mental illness you have to hide.
I agree ABC has had questionable show choices over the years. I now only watch 2 shows on this network. And since I will be going to stop watching this one I am back to only Shark Tank.
So long ABC

Well, just as in classical music, you can praise the wonderful, technical composition qualities of a piece but still think it sounds terrible.
I for one, think this show is too depressing to be entertaining, regardless of its medical technical merits.

Personally I am THRILLED that someone cares enough to tackle this subject on TV where those who suffer can feel at ease seeing that others feel the way they do, and especially for those friends and family members who refuse to believe that these illnesses are REAL and won't get educated on what they can do to help... Even moreso, the what NOT to do items which can make the illnesses heighten and the person possibly become dangerous to himself and others.
The character of Dr. Black is very realistic along with what she goes through, yet she is a very gentle and understanding doctor with her patients. Until there is education gotten by the people who haven't a clue, I think the suffers of these horrendous illnesses will ALWAYS make the BEST counselors, friends, and doctors to those who are sick.
The best line in the show so far has been, "This is NOT an illness such as Diabetes, this is an illness that is hardwired into the brain and there is NO CLUE." To those who hate the show and do not suffer like this, the quote "Would you turn your back on a cancer patient? So why refuse to believe, get educated and learn to help those with mental disorders?" comes to mind. There are 2 degrees of Bipolar, 1 is called "High Functioning" where all the symptoms are there but very manageable and rarely seen by others, and the other 2 is just plain dangerous if not handled properly. The symptoms of 2 are the same as 1, but are felt to a MUCH higher degree.
From what I have seen on Black Box so far, it it written very well, the symptoms and behaviors of the symptoms are realistic, and AGAIN I am thankful that this topic has been put on TV where healthy people can hopefully learn a bit and not be so judgement. Education would also prevent a great deal of deaths due to the illness too.
Dr. Black going off her meds... You are who you are before diagnosis and medicated. If that diagnosis isn't until later life, you know your character and it's been proven that Bipolar people are VERY artistic and creative. Soo many famous people dating WAY back suffered. Google it to see. When diagnosis is made and medication starts "stabilizing" you, a deal of your personality and what you are physically and mentally able to do just vanishes. It's a side effect. I knew a Corporate person working for 22 years and successful, who had a breakdown at 34, got treated and has never been able to work since. She LOVED her work, her time with employees, etc. and now those events have to be accepted as ONLY events from the past. Going off the meds can be hard NOT to do because you want YOURSELF and who you once were back. Dr. Black had the normal euphoric - hyper sexual - unstoppable - depression cyclic reaction. Watching that looks weird, but look at what is behind it... Just wanting to feel and be herself again... Although VERY dangerous, she was happy and unrestricted for a couple days. Can ya blame anyone who wants that???
THANK YOU for reading my heartfelt and passionate note here. Let's vote to get educated so we can save lives by recognizing the simple symptoms. <3

So far, I have found it to be so boring, I just couldn't get into it at all. A real dud! I'm trying to give it a chance, when I can stay awake through the episodes. I hope it gets better fast, or I'm gone!

After watching what seemed like endless promos for this show I was intrigued and watched the pilot. I feel as if it is a very poor imitation of Perception's (TNT)concept of a highly intelligent person grappling with mental illness and the decision of whether or not to take their prescribed medication and what happens when they don't, I think Perception does it better. The problem I have with Black Box is the main character is an active neurologist treating patients and adjusting their meds while on her own "high",all the while seeing therapist Vanessa Redgrave(who I personally believe might be a hallucination). I was looking forward to the patient interaction as she would have insight, but the show failed to have a redeeming plot-line to sustain the actions of Catherine. I think this show might be cancelled sooner than later, either way I will not be watching. Sorry ABC - but there has been some bad and disappointing choices on your end lately.
