It's the 1960's and times are turbulent in the United States during the Vietnam War era. Sidney Muntzinger is an elderly advertising copywriter turned author who lives with his wife Kay, a therapist, in their upper-class suburban home in New York City.

Their lives are unexpectedly turned upside down by the arrival of Lennie, a young radicalized woman who they know from when her family helped Kay out after her parents passed away. Lennie brings with her a fair bit of trouble, as she is a member of the Constitutional Liberation Army and on the run from the law after breaking out of prison.
