In the 1850s, Captain Charles Boone decides to relocate his family of three children to his ancestral home in the town of Preacher's Corners, Maine after his wife dies at sea.
Once there, he learns about his ancestors' dark, sordid history and must confront it in order to put a stop to the darkness that has plagued the Boones for generations.
Rebecca Morgan is a young woman who has returned to Preacher's Corners after college to write a story for the Atlantic Magazine. She finds inspiration with Boone's arrival, and applies to be governess of the infamous Chapelwaite manor in order to write about the family. This leads her to unravel a mystery that has plagued her own family for years.
