MTV has cancelled the American version of the UK-adapted Skins, a racy drama targeted at a teenage audience. The news comes almost three months after the series aired its last episode amid low ratings and fleeing advertisers.

As far back as the show's second episode, rumors were already swirling about the likelihood of Skins' cancellation. Big-name companies were quick to pull ads after the show generated its fair share of controversy due to its subject matter. Combine the lack of ad revenue with dipping ratings and the writing was already on the wall.

In making the news official, MTV released a statement saying, "Skins is a global television phenomenon that, unfortunately, didn't connect with a US audience as much as we had hoped."
