ABC has renewed Private Practice for a sixth season. The Shonda Rhimes-created series is the third of her shows to receive a recent renewal - Grey's Anatomy will return for Season 9 and Scandal has earned a second season.

In fact it was Rhimes' other series, Scandal, that forced Private Practice to move from its comfy Thursday time slot to Tuesday nights, where it initially lost nearly 20 percent of its viewers. It has managed to recoup a lot of those viewers in subsequent weeks, though ratings for its most recent episode were at an all-time low, earning just a 1.4 in the adults 18-49 demographic - far below its average.

There is no word on the number of episodes ordered for Season 6 of Private Practice, but 22 would be in-line with recent seasons. Expect a late September 2012 return.
