The drama will not return for Season 2.
June 22, 2016
HBO has changed its mind on Vinyl, announcing today that it will not be moving forward with a second season after all. This news comes four months after the freshman drama was picked up for Season 2 just days after its premiere episode aired.
The cancellation comes as a bit of a surprise, seeing as how the cable network showed early confidence in the series by issuing the original renewal. It is rare for an HBO series to only run for one season, though not unheard of. It made a similar move with comedy The Brink in 2015, renewing the show during its first season only to change its mind and cancel it a few months later.
The network released the following statement regarding today's news:
After careful consideration, we have decided not to proceed with a second season of Vinyl. Obviously, this was not an easy decision. We have enormous respect for the creative team and cast for their hard work and passion on this project.
While no reason was given for the reversal in decision, the show's modest ratings and high production costs likely factored into the decision. Also of note is that HBO's chief programmer, Michael Lombardo, has stepped down since the show's initial renewal, and that his replacement may not have shared his vision for the series.

I liked Vinyl. I loved Bobby Canavale, the music, the connections to New York in the 1970s.
Getting rid of the BRINK was just lame. HBO better keep track of their audience or their gonna lose them.

Show was rough and confusing at first then i really got into it. the history and science fiction intertwined was great how they introduced the old music with something you may have or not heard in that time line great show wish it would go for a second

This show was awful... Cliche after Cliche! Nothing we haven't seen before. It was a show for the simple minded numb-nuts! HBO made the right decision! Not sure why people are mad... the ratings were not great! People should get mad, when HBO cancels a show like HUNG.. that was their biggest mistake in years!

With names like Jagger and Scorsese associated with it Vinyl grabbed your attention and garnered respect out of the gate. But just as it's subject matter it showed promise initially only to burn out and fade away...Hopefully, it won't be replaced by Disco Dancing shows Å‚

Too bad,it suffered the same fate in the same way as THE BRINK, which was a totally awesome show. I have lost a lot of faith in HBO.
