The musical drama ends after one season.
May 11, 2018
Fans will be sad to hear that there will be no second season of Rise, NBC's promising new drama from Jason Katims, the man behind Friday Night Lights and Parenthood. The news comes ahead of the musical drama's now-series finale, which airs next Tuesday.
The mid-season series premiered in March to critical acclaim, but ultimately struggled to find a sizeable audience on Tuesday nights.
Based on the novel "Drama High", Rise followed a dedicated teacher and family man who overcomes his own self-doubt to take over his high school's lackluster theater department. In doing so, his passion for the program galvanizes not only the faculty and students, but the entire working-class town.

Holy crap!!!! Canceling "RISE" ? A show with story lines about life situations we can all relate to? With such great cast members too! What's next,,banning theater altogether? Been living with depression all summer over this. Won't be watching NBC anymore!!! Why is it only shows that make sense get canceled while shows( I won't list them here) that suck don't? SHAME ON YOU NBC!!!!!!! Mike S.

Rise was one of the best shows on TV. It actually was a story about life today and the problems the kids face today and it's today's reality. This is what's going on in the schools and what the teenagers are dealing with in today's world!!! Please rethink this. Rise may have helped a lot of kids and their families. It should NOT BE CANCELLED...PLEASE!

What!!! I’m shocked!!! They cancel this show, but decide they’re going to pick up FOX’s trash, Brooklyn Nine Nine, that FOX cancelled. What’s even worse is AP Bio is probably the WORST tv show and it even shows by ratings, but that show they renew. Based on what I read this show may not have had the ratings, but it was critically acclaimed. So NBC’s new guidelines to be renewed are bad show with low ratings. Makes a lot of sense. I would like to apply for a job with NBC because their current executives need to be fired!!! In case, they’re wondering I do have a degree in acting/directing. Did you get your degree in mechanics because you obviously have no background in this!!! This is the one show that has ever brought up thorough, real, discussions with my 13 year old daughter about life issues and topics. With all the crazy things going on in this world, finally a show that isn’t a reality, a stupid comedy, a dumb musical (what Glee became, not even remotely like this show. This show is so much more similar to Parenthood and Friday Night Lights, That were both great shows.) However, I think this show is even better. I agree with what the other person said that most
Iikely a play like this would never get approved. But, ironically, my understanding is this was supposedly based on a true story. So maybe someone could actually verify if it’s actually true and we were all wrong about this actually happening. What’s really sad is that it was our daughter who was actually the one who initiated the different conversations about sexuality, abortion, drugs/drinking, alcoholism, etc. I want to at least thank you for making the show for 1 season from the bottom of both of our hearts! It really meant a lot to my whole family! To the person or persons that renewed AP Bio, picked up FOX’s cancelled Brooklyn Nine Nine - “Great job, for not knowing what the hell you are doing!!! I really hope you are fired and NEVER work again in the entertainment industry!!!”

So disappointed. We loved Friday Night Lights and Parenthood so much and feel this show needed another season to develop the characters. Shame on you for cancelling quality!

I really liked this show. It had depth and different story lines. I don’t think it was given enough time.

Why can't you just develop the characters more, we already love this cast and just want to see more out of them. Didn't you ever get a second chance?

Emo Glee. And nowhere near as great as Glee. You could just about match the characters one for one. Not surprised at all it got cancelled. Any person who has ever had a child in high school knows how unbelievable this crap is. The education system does not work the way they are portraying it at all. That play would never have been approved, period.
NBC needs to stop with this unrealistic melodrama crap. They also need to stop dragging out a storyline for the entire season that could be shown in a few episodes. The pacing on your shows is way too slow. Are your writers really that uncreative that they can’t keep things moving?
