No Season 2 for the mid-season comedy.
June 29, 2018
It looks like Champions won't be back. It is being reported this afternoon that NBC has cancelled the mid-season comedy after its freshman outing. The move isn't surprising, as the half-hour show was not a particularly strong performer for the network.
The Mindy Kaling-produced series premiered in March but failed to find much of an audience during the course of its 10-episode run. While ratings for its first two weeks showed promise, viewership dipped for its third episode and failed to recover for the rest of the season.
Champions followed a washed-up high school athlete who reluctantly takes over his family's Brooklyn gym rather than pursue his own dreams. Just as he is thinking of selling the gym and moving to Florida, an ex from his high school days surprises him by dropping off their teenage son on his doorstep.

I'm being honest here... I never heard of this show. But then to be totally honest I haven't picked up a new show on NBC in 5 years..

Just curious... why does being a gay man mean you have a dialect??? Gay women don't have a dialect. You aren't "born" with a dialect. And it certainly is not an inherited trait - crossing all cultures and ethnicities. A child, incapable of actually understanding the implications of sexual identification could ONLY have such a dialect were he coached, trained, or otherwise made to believe that's how he should be speaking. It wasn't natural.

I really feel sorry for Anders Holm, coming from such a cool show as workaholics to that. i gave it a try but i knew it was a cancellation waiting to happen from the get go. it also felt like watching the Mindy project 2.0 it was pretty much the same formula. the borderline schizophrenic racist senior citizen, the snarky one and Fortune Feimster playing the same role over and over again. good ridance for Andres tho. i hope he gets to work on a better show.

The kid was an over the top stereotype. He gave all kid actors a bad name. He was poorly written for. It seemed like they wanted to make sure people got that he was what he was, but they went too far. I don't think the kid could handle the writing. He leaned too much into and that is why he fell.

I'm not surprised this show got cancelled. The plot was too much of a stretch and the characters were too formulaic. I'm sure we will be seeing more of J.J. Totah, his delivery was excellent and he wasn't so much a stereotype as a very confident young gay man who just happens to be obsessed with Broadway and is kind of queeny. Not bad traits and his delivery is excellent. My husband and I loved J.J. Totah but the show wasn't the vehicle he needs.
