Netflix announced this morning that 13 Reasons Why has been picked up for a fourth and final season. The news comes along with the release of a new trailer for Season 3, which we now know will premiere in just three weeks on August 23.

The decision to end the show after four seasons does not come as a complete surprise. While the series has been a strong performer overall for the streaming service, it has experienced its fair share of controversy as well. Its dark subject matter has been a point of contention from the start, and subsequent seasons did not receive the same critical acclaim as the first, with many noting that it felt unnecessary to continue the show.

Adapted from the bestselling 2007 novel "Thirteen Reasons Why" by Jay Asher, the series is about the story behind a teenage girl named Hannah who takes her own life. In the weeks following her shocking death, one of her classmates finds a box on his porch that contains recordings Hannah made explaining the 13 reasons why she decided to commit suicide.

Look for the fourth and final season of 13 Reasons Why in 2020.
