The network has reversed its original renewal.
September 16, 2020
It is being reported that ABC has cancelled Stumptown after one season - walking back its original decision to renew the series back in May. The sad news is the latest in a recent trend of networks reversing renewals months after handing them out.
The drama premiered last fall and put in a decent showing during its 18-episode run, garnerning strong critical praise and respectable ratings on Wednesday nights. It appears ABC's decision is related to setbacks in filming due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has affected the futures of numerous shows this year.
Based on the Stumptown graphic novels, the series stars Cobie Smulders as Dex Parios, a less-than-perfect army veteran living in Portland, Oregon. She's quick-witted, carries a gambling debt, has a complicated love life, and takes care of her brother. She utilizes her military intelligence in her job as a private investigator, but her unapologetic nature makes her a target of dangerous criminals and often at odds with the local police.

This is not entirely the fault of ABC.
Stumptown is filmed in and around Portland, Oregon which as been all but burned to the ground over the summer. Why would a production company want to risk people, money, time and effort working in a place that is not safe and there is no guarantee that you will be able to complete what you start?

When Agents Of Shield ended, I said the only ABC show I have coming back is Stumptown. With this cancellation, I have no reason to watch ABC. I will not fall into the trap of watching any more of their new shows. All ABC wants to show is "reality" programs, dance shows with barely famous celebs, and crappy game show remakes. More time for Netflix, TNT, FX, etcetra.

Dang it. Well ABC goes on my list of networks that I will refuse to watch any new show. Burned too many times now with really getting into a new show that ends with a season 1 cliffhanger and then gets cancelled. Whiskey Cavalier got me the previous year.

I know this gets thrown around a lot, but this is the type of show that might do well on Hulu.
I wasn't expecting to like this show, but damn was it good. I was really looking forward to season two.

I agree. How many good shows does ABC have to cancel before people realize that they suck. They keep absolutely horrendous shows IMO like the Connors to save face and virtue signal. And yet, a good show like Stumptown gets the axe. It's truly pathetic.

I loved this show! I love crime dramas with humor (like Castle). Did I expect it to last 10+ seasons? Of course not. But with good characters and storylines, this show could have easily did 3-5 seasons. I swear these networks have no problem canceling good shows with decent ratings like Stumptown. But renew shows like The Bachelor. What are they on season 42? Soon there will be nothing left but reality show trash.
