Showtime announced today that Yellowjackets has been renewed for a third season. The pickup is an early one, coming three months before the drama returns for its sophomore run in March.

The show became a breakout hit for the network after its premiere last year. It has garnered strong praise from critics and was nominated for a slew of awards. It also found a healthy audience and became one of the most talked about shows of the year.

"With Yellowjackets' runaway success in season one and the pent-up anticipation for season two, we wanted to maximize the momentum by fast tracking season three now," said Chris McCarthy, President/CEO, Showtime and Paramount Media Networks. "The show's ambition is only exceeded by its execution, and I thank the incredible creative team behind it, including Ashley, Bart, Jonathan, eOne and the Showtime team, for turning this into such a success."

In Yellowjackets, a team of high school girls soccer players were involved in a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness 25 years ago. In present day, we learn about their lives over that time, and how they went from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans. We also see the lives they've attempted to piece back together, proving that the past can never really be left behind and what began out in the wilderness is far from over.
