The streamer has reversed its previous renewal.
August 18, 2023
It is being reported that Amazon's Prime Video has cancelled The Peripheral after one season. The move walks back the renewal that was given to the sci-fi drama six months ago. Word is that the decision came about due to the ongoing writers and actors strikes, which are now into their fourth and second months respectively.
Based on the 2014 book of the same name by William Gibson, The Peripheral follows Flynne Fisher, a smart and ambitious young woman living in the rural American South. She works at a 3D printing shop and plays VR games for rich people to earn extra money. One night she dons a headset and finds herself in futuristic London. It's a sleek and mysterious world, but it's not like any game she's played before. Flynne soon realizes this virtual reality experience is actually very real. 70 years in the future, somebody in London has found a way to open a door to Flynne's world. As Flynne searches to find the person who connected their worlds, her presence sets dangerous forces into motion that are intent on destroying Flynne and her family in her own world.

It's a pity. It was both a time travel and alternate world story, and both were handled very well. It also had a great cast. I did think it sagged towards the end of the first season, though. And while it didn't resolve the storyline, it left things in a place where you could see the ending.
Supposedly it was already on the bubble before the Hollywood strikes. Given that the future for streaming is now about counting pennies, I can see why Amazon took the excuse of the strikes to cancel the series.

Well, that's a bummer. It was a unique and interesting series. Too bad its cancelled. However, pay your writers and your actors, Hollywood, jeez!

This show cost 175 million to make. League of their own was also expensive. This show was great though. I wish they had cancelled rings of power season three instead. Season two i s already filmed. Season four of snowpiercer is filmed and not released. Perhaps amazon should show it.

Really disappointing. Okay, so the writers and actors strikes means they gotta push the production of season 2,back a ways... I get that. Why on God's Earth does it require a complete cancelation??? That reasoning makes absolutely no sense. Lots of shows have had production of their next season postponed because of the strikes, but they aren't all getting canceled.

It was good for 6 episodes then sucked hard the last 2. The 2 episodes with the hit man were actually fantastic.. then they killed him.
It's the fucking Westworld guy pulling the same convoluted shit. He's so enthralled by trying to prevent users from figuring out plot points that he makes the stories unwatchable.
