Word is out that Tokyo Vice has been cancelled by Max after two seasons. Coming two months after the conclusion of its sophomore run, the news was confirmed by producers today during a panel at the Produced By conference in LA.
"Over the last five years, Max has made sure we got to tell our story. They have supported us through thick and thin. Not only did they give us these two seasons, they said yes when we asked to end season one with a series of cliffhangers, and they said yes when we asked for two extra episodes so we could land the plane in the way J.T. had always envisioned," said creator J.T. Rogers and director Alan Poul in a joint statement. "We're grateful not only to Max but to our partners Fifth Season, who sold the show around the world and made it a global success story. They were in the trenches with us always, guaranteeing that we could make the show we wanted to make. The response from both the press and from fans, in particular to season two, has been overwhelming. It's been thrilling to find out how deeply viewers have engaged with our characters and to hear how they are clamoring for more. We know there is more story to tell. Of course, we'll see what the future holds, but we are indeed grateful to have been able to share this story on Max until now."
Loosely inspired by the 2009 book of the same name by Jake Adelstein, the series follows an American journalist who relocates from Missouri to Tokyo in the late 1990s to join the staff of a major Japanese newspaper on the Metropolitan Police beat as their first foreign-born reporter. He is taken under the wing of a veteran detective in the vice squad and begins exploring the dark and dangerous world of the Japanese yakuza in the underbelly of Tokyo.

Dooky. Wth are you talking about? This is based on a true story of a reporter in japan in the mid 90s. it was right before the yazuka was really brought down mostly. This was never planned as three season show in spite of solid ratings.i guess it could really cover how the yazuka fell but was the reporter even there? Oh you mean there are two background gay characters? They are barely in it. Just fast forward through sex scenes. I actually do that to most screen sex sceneseven hetro ones. I find them distracting, just show them get started. We get the point and we know what sex is like. Get on with the story The show was excellent, , so stop whining..next tie fast forward just fast forward from now on .

Dooky you're a special snowflake thinking everything needs to cater to you. All y'all do is complain and whine. Grow some balls and get a job and watch something else, dude. Stop being ignorant and whiny all the time.

GOOD RIDDANCE. I am so freaking sick of all these WOKE GARBAGE infesting my tv. Go woke, go broke, Hollywood!!! Time for some great television for a change. Television that doesn't pander to the brain rot in California that want everything to be produced for "MODERN. AUDIENCES." There is no such thing. Piss off with your woke agenda. Buh bye now!

Great show, very sad that it's over. Loved the ensemble cast, particularly Ken Watanabe. That said, it's very funny that most of these comments are people arguing over whether or not the show is "woke" or "pandering." I guess this is what media analysis has been reduced to.

Great show. Hbo keeps dumping great shows ever since the merge with Discovery. Loosely based on a true story. Many of the characters were composites of multiple people in order to keep the story moving forward. The story was based on the actual reporter working for a newspaper in Japan. The show used Japanese actors to tell a story that takes place in Japan. It was based in reality. I will miss it.

This show wrapped up in a perfect bow. They wanted only 2 seasons, they got it.
'Cancelled'is a dumb term when they wanted it to conclude.
One of my favorites but it told it's story. Onto something new.

I just finished watching season 2 and was excited for a possible third season but I guess not. Too bad it was such a good show and was in no way “woke”. I didn’t know that it was loosely based on a real person. What I liked about the program was that it was a glimpse into another mob culture instead of another mafia show

This was a great show. Love the casting! Unfortunately this was on Max. Max has poor viewership. I admit to be part of the problem, I did not keep up with this and did not watch it until it had been out for months. Well acted and well shot. The writing was OKAY but when you take into account this is based on true events, their hands were tied. Maybe this will get saved by another platform, but if all else fails, just look into these events yourself and see the conclusion of the real life events that inspired the show.
As someone who hates agenda pushing in shows, I have to say this is not race baiting or "minority pandering." This is just the story of true events and everyone is the correct gender/race vs the true events.
