Marianne and Connell are both from a small town west of Ireland but their backgrounds are quite different. Connell is a popular, good looking athletic student, while Marianne is a proud, unpopular loner.

An attraction sparks between them, and over a span of several years they engage in an on-again/off-again romance that starts at school and continues through college. As they explore different versions of themselves, their relationship will be tested.
