Syfy has announced that freshman series Alphas has been renewed for a second season. The network has ordered 13 additional episodes of the superhuman drama for 2012.

"Alphas' smart, innovative approach to a superhero franchise has clearly caught on with our audience," said Syfy's president of original content, Mark Stern. "From the first-rate writing to the outstanding cast lead by David Strathairn, we're very proud of what was achieved in its first season and look forward to seeing this series fulfill even more of its creative potential in a second season."

Alphas, which premiered in July, follows a team of investigators with superhuman powers out to thwart evildoers with similar abilities. The show has aired eight of its 11 first-season episodes thus far, averaging 3.3 million total viewers (Live + 7 data). Its debut holds the distinction of being Syfy's most-watched original scripted series premiere in two years.
