The detective drama will return in 2016-2017.
March 25, 2016
CBS announced today that Elementary has been renewed for a fifth season. The veteran procedural drama, which has remained a formidable entry in the network's lineup, will reach the 100-episode milestone when it returns for the 2016-2017 season.
Along with Elementary, CBS issued early renewals to six of its other veteran dramas including Hawaii Five-0, Madam Secretary, Scorpion, Blue Bloods, NCIS: Los Angeles, and NCIS: New Orleans. The network's freshman dramas - including Supergirl, Code Black, and Limitless - are still awaiting their fates.

This is (usually) the only detective show that I haven't figured out the ending before it is revealed. Glad it's back.

The show is based on the premise that Miller and Liu are the only Holmes and Watson.That's what makes it work.Miller is fantastic.

Ahem, we really like the show. As for the premise, it is a retelling or re-imagining of the Holmes-Watson stories. It still works, just suspend what you know of the original story. Holmes, Watson, Lastrard, Moriarity, even (for example) the re-telling of the HOUNDS OF THE BASKERVILLES are shadowy inspirations. Miller & Liu have made their versions of the famous friends quite affable, though it took me a while to embrace this version Holmes. As I recall the original Basil Rathbone version being softer and more obtuse in dealings with people. But both have the deductive power of the elementary to make them fun. I do however miss hearing "The Game is Afoot!"

@Bill - You are a marketers dream! Was the book "Gullible's Travels" written about you? "They are the real Watson and Holmes..." Real fictional characters? Brilliant! Lucy Liu never smiles and the word "awesome" is essentially meaningless.

Thanks all for the clarification. I do like Lucy Liu also, its nothing against her personally. The idea that a British man can be replaced by a Chinese girl is just weird to me. It's like when they had Cedric the Entertainer play Ralph Kramden. For him I am sure it was a way to tribute one of his childhood idols, but for everyone else (or almost everyone else) it was like WTH, Ralph Kramden was white. This is actually a little worse because they changed Watson's ethnicity AND sex. They should have done it as descendants, especially since it appears to take place in modern time and the original characters would be long dead by now. Just my opinion. Glad everyone who watches the show is enjoying it.

@Ragnarok:
It's a kind of spoof of the Holmes and Watson characters. A variation, a different version. Not biologically related to the original people.
That's why they could change a white man into a Chinese woman (which apparently sent some diehard Sherlock Holmes readers into conniptions).
