The veteran drama will sign off in 2017.

The end is near for the Salvatore brothers. As many expected, The Vampire Diaries will be concluding after Season 8. The official announcement was made today at the show's Comic-Con panel in San Diego, where a farewell video by the cast was aired for its gathered fans in Ballroom 20.
While today's news makes it official, discussion of the long-running drama's end has been swirling for quite some time. Back in April, star Ian Somerhalder told fans at a convention that Season 8 would be the show's last. And despite the The CW maintaining at the time that no decision had been made, many saw the writing on the wall.
The Vampire Diaries was a key part of The CW's lineup for a good part of its run. While its ratings have certainly taken a hit in recent seasons, the show was a flagship series for the network for a number of years, even spawning spin-off The Originals back in 2013.
Look for the farewell season of The Vampire Diaries to premiere on Friday, October 21.

The end of the series was a total let down. A show about vampires having a happy ending shouldn’t happen. It should have had at least one being dragged off into hell instead of destroying hell its self. As for the devil, himself that was a joke. The devil is meant to be pure evil to the core. He done nothing more than set himself on fire and ripe his heart out and had a couple of people fight over what he said they done on each other. They went up against better villains over the run of the show, with villains like Markos and the Travelers, Lily and the Heretics (who were a bit of a let-down as well given how they were billed up to be), Dr Wes Maxfield, Julian, Silas, Katherine Pierce (better at the start of her run), Klaus and Kai Parker. The devil should of been the most feared villain of all them. The best part of the finial 2 season was when they made Caroline turn her switch of.

The cast kept this going. But it's impressive that any horror show lasted this long. So kudos to this show.

I've watched since Season 1. It should have ended probably a few years ago, before Nina left (where has she been anyway?). It got worse after she left, but not because she left. The writers got lazy or ran out of things to write about. To me the best thing about this show was the brothers. Their relationship, their story. It got sidetracked with Damon mourning the loss of whiny Elena. Blech. So glad it's a shortened season and will finally be put to rest.

Way past time. For immortal creatures those vampires were getting long in the tooth.

The show went down hill fast after Nina Left. This was to be expected, they have been running out of ideas for a long time now. So well done TVD for lasting so long overall it was Very Good

Another original program just giving way for more heroes to fill the slots like supergirl did

As it should...I felt the show went off the rails after Nina left. There's no more Gilbert's on the show,Bonnie and Damon are leaving after season 8,it's only right for it to end.

Loved this more than the last two seasons of True Blood.
I know it has to end but it's had a great run.
