No back order for the new CBS drama.
November 21, 2016
It is being reported that CBS has decided against ordering any additional episodes of freshman series Pure Genius. The decision comes as no real surprise, as the medical drama has made little impact in the ratings since its late October premiere, and currently ranks as the network's lowest-rated new series of the 2016-2017 season.
Pure Genius was created by Jason Katims, known for past audience favorites Friday Night Lights and Parenthood. This latest effort, which follows a tech billionaire who creates a cutting-edge hospital to treat the rarest of medical mysteries, unfortunately did not seem to catch on with viewers the same way as his more-successful shows have.
CBS currently plans to air all 13 originally-ordered episodes of Pure Genius, leaving nine still left in its run. However with it being the network's only new series not to receive any more episodes, there appears to be little hope of it getting a second season.

@Jeffrey Bull is not the highest rated show on TV but it is in the top 10, but I wouldn't bother watching the show because I don't like Dr. Phil in real life so I personally wouldn't bother watching. But CBS the the network that's still airing The Odd Couple so they'll keep anything on. So this show must have been real bad.

@Suzanne - Pure Genius is very much both a continuing (arc) story and episodic as each episode I've watched finishes with the current patients' problems coming to a conclusion. (I'm one episode behind.) The arc storyline is developing slowly and therefore isn't of concern having it cut off. Nevertheless, each episode is light fare so in the end it would depend on how good the bigger story ends up being. But there is no long run, and there's not enough to judge it by yet except for those that are sure they don't like it. Given how far-fetched the problem solving has been, it was hoeing a tough road. For whatever reason, I liked it anyway and have kept watching. Perhaps there are several more episodes that haven't aired.

It's gotten to the point of not even watching new shows, because every show I like gets cancelled. Damn it!!

I really think that they should give it a chance now that "How to Get Away With Murder" is off until January 21. I found it interesting, but I did DVR it. HTGAW Murder is my show!

Question: I only read a few comments so this may have been discussed. Given that I do like arc stories as well as the episodic formula shows that I know a lot of posters here hate, IS IT WORTH WATCHING the episodes in my queue? Do they stand alone? I don't want to start only to get left hanging...

Tap, Bull is the highest rated new show on network TV, so I can't see it getting canned any time soon.
I only watched 2 episodes of Pure Genius and was bored to tears, so I wasn't surprised it's getting cancelled.

I'm not surprised that it is getting canceled. It's a good show but they put it up against The Blacklist and How To Get Away With Murder.

I'm unlikely to complain about people who complain about networks cancelling shows they like - for one, I do that complaining myself, right here in the comment section where we are free to bitch (and bitch about about people who bitch). But also, we see networks extending shows when only a couple of episodes have aired, we see shows getting moved to different timeslots, and we see shows with poor ratings (often deseverdly) getting a pass their first year. So all is not so equal. We would like the networks to comit more to those shows we like. Of course, the large majority of the time, the ratings rule and we bitch to get it off our chest. And we celebrate when a show we didn't like (or didn't watch) gets cancelled. Did I just describe you?
Now comparing Pure Genius to House is rather comical. I never watched more than a few minutes at a time of House, but I did surf right into it hundreds of times. Half of those times, Hugh Laurie was only one there -- it was all about Laurie and I can't stand the guy (I hate him as much as I hate Marie Osmond). House was 100% darkness and seeming insanity. Pure Genius is meant to be fun, but resoectful. Laurie is obviously a good actor, but I just don't like him - personally or acting. If he was in Pure Genius, and played his House role, I guess some of us would have been more happy. NOT ME. :)

Like I said elsewhere on this site, this show looked awful to me. Couldn't bring myself to watch a single episode. Apparently I'm not alone.
And for the people complaining about shows getting cancelled...I'm trying to find a nicer way of saying "get over it" but it's just not coming to me. Shows get cancelled. Some are good but some legitimately suck. Shows come and go. Try to enjoy the ride.
