The new comedy will not return for a second season.
June 23, 2017
ABC's new comedy Downward Dog has been cancelled. The network's decision comes six episodes into the show's run and just four days before its now-series finale. Co-creators Michael Killen and Samm Hodges broke the news on Twitter this afternoon, writing that the network, which was in support of the show creatively, could not find a way to justify a second season financially.
The half-hour series premiered last month and has been garnering decent ratings and generally-positive feedback from critics. But with the cast's options due to expire in the coming week, its numbers just weren't strong enough for the network to justify bringing the show back.
Downward Dog starred Allison Tolman as a woman attempting to deal with her tumultuous personal life and stressful career. Observing her daily struggles is her increasingly-lonely and philosophical dog Martin, who tells her story from a canine's uniquely unfiltered perspective.
Catch the show's two-part series finale this Tuesday, June 27.

Excellent show, clever, original and fresh that requires intelligence to understand but let's cancel this one and renew trash like The Bachelor for the 30th time. This is the dumbing down of America.

I'm so sad. I do not enjoy very many network sitcoms but this one actually made me LOL every week. My husband even thought it was funny and he hates everything I like lol. I loved Martin. I don't understand network executives logic. Bring back The Gong Show though and prentend we don't known know its Mike Myers, and make sure The Bachelor gets 18 more seasons, because that's just about all the viewers intelligence can handle right?

What a great little show. Viewership was growing through the grapevine. Bad move, ABC. We all need to send ABC a dog biscuit and plead it's return!!

All I can guess is that it was too far above the general public's intelligence level.

Are you serious? This show was hilarious! Original, creative and relatable- dogs even seemed to love Martin and hearing his point of view! ABC is making another mistake. Bringing back the Gong Show, and some other ridiculous game shows, yet cancelling DD and Imaginary Mary instead of giving them a chance? Who's the trash dog now?! Looks like all ABC execs want to do is sniff through a pile of old 70's trash game shows to recycle what has already been cancelled rather than giving new ideas a real chance to catch on.

I said I couldn't make it through one episode, but that's just not true. In fact, I'll be watching the finale. I tend to get angry and lash out against things that are easy targets. But make no mistake, I'll miss it.

I knew it was gonna be cancelled as soon as it was announced. I don't even know why people waste their time pitching shows to the big networks anyways.
