The new comedy will not return for a second season.
June 23, 2017
ABC's new comedy Downward Dog has been cancelled. The network's decision comes six episodes into the show's run and just four days before its now-series finale. Co-creators Michael Killen and Samm Hodges broke the news on Twitter this afternoon, writing that the network, which was in support of the show creatively, could not find a way to justify a second season financially.
The half-hour series premiered last month and has been garnering decent ratings and generally-positive feedback from critics. But with the cast's options due to expire in the coming week, its numbers just weren't strong enough for the network to justify bringing the show back.
Downward Dog starred Allison Tolman as a woman attempting to deal with her tumultuous personal life and stressful career. Observing her daily struggles is her increasingly-lonely and philosophical dog Martin, who tells her story from a canine's uniquely unfiltered perspective.
Catch the show's two-part series finale this Tuesday, June 27.

Not a bad show but not a fan of repeated use of the work 'like' either'. Why do writers - on almost every show also use the words 'its complicated' as it is somehow a coded massage to all imagination-starved writers to fit it in there somewhere. Life IS complicated - deal with it as the rest of us do!

I like wanted to like this show, but like every time I like watched it, it was like listening to like a 13 year old girl talk, but like with a man's voice.
Whoever wrote the dialogue for the dog should have been fired the first time s/he wrote the word "like" in a sentence for no other reason but to use it. We stopped watching this show after 3 episodes. This cancellation comes as no surprise at all.

Wow, how did this ever get on the air in the first place?! Couldn't make it through one episode.

So sad they cancelled Downward Dog. I, like so many of my "dog parent" friends, loved Martins thoughts on life. Of all the stupid shows on ABC, this is the one they cut, really! "This is like the worst day of my entire life"

Of course this show is canceled! It's original. Funny, candid. Can't have any of that! Let's have some more bikinis. Some more "reality " shows! Yeah. Another dose of garbage. Not something unique and heartwarming like Martin and Nan! Shame. Shame. Shame Good thing the local library is right up the street.

Sorry to read this news, but it's not unexpected. I liked the show very much. However, it's a better fit for, say, HBO than ABC. Hope it gets another chance on cable.

Okay, IMSC, I went overboard in my critique of this show.I'll stand by what I said about the tone being a bit drab, but the backstory is the dog's voice reminded me of my ex! Lol, as nuts as it sounds, I got triggered everytime the show aired. Mea Culpa, I had a personal axe to grind. I realize there's so much work that goes into a show, and I am just bitter. Glad it's off the air, but it's for my own personal reasons. I probably need therapy, lol.

I wanted to like this show so much. It's totally my sense of humor. We watched it every week because we kept hoping it would get better, but I always left the show with such a downer feeling. Like everyone is so sad in the show. I never looked forward to watching it because I knew I'd usually finish feeling kind of depressed. But we still watched it out of some weird sense of loyalty...I guess for the poor dog.

I am so crushed by this news! I thought "Downward Dog" was very innovative with the concept of the owner-dog relationship told from the dog's perspective. Another thing I like was the recurring story line where Martin the dog had a nemesis in a cat named Pepper who he really hated. It was refreshing to have a "normal-looking" actress in Allison Tolman rather than some skinny blonde in the lead role.
