HBO officially greenlights the crime drama's return.
August 31, 2017
It has been talked about for months, and today HBO finally made it official: True Detective will be returning for a third season. The crime anthology series from Nic Pizzolatto last aired a new episode over two years ago, and its future had been in doubt after an uneven second season drew mixed reviews following a widely-acclaimed debut outing.
Pizzolatto, who is currently working on writing Season 3, will be making his directorial debut for the show's next season. What we know about the premise so far is that a macabre crime takes place in the Ozarks and the ensuing mystery will deepen across multiple decades. Oscar winner Mahershala Ali has been cast in the lead role as a police detective from Northwest Arkansas.

fantastic choice for a director. Blue Ruin is one of the best films with a budget under a million dollars ever made and Green Room was terrifying. This has
all of the pieces for a great season of television so hopefully they'll all fit together.
I'd describe it has a horrific train wreck of a season.
