The streaming series will return for Season 2.
October 23, 2017
CBS Interactive announced today that Star Trek: Discovery will be returning for a second season. The good news comes after CBS All Access reported that the new entry in the storied franchise has been performing well on the platform, where it has driven subscriber growth with record sign-ups in a single day, week, and month.
It has been two years since Star Trek: Discovery was originally announced, and it has been a bumpy road from then until the show was finally able to make its much-anticipated debut last month. On top of taking the time to ensure it would live up to the expectations of a new entry in the Star Trek franchise, the big-budget production was met with multiple delays and even a showrunner change during that time.
The efforts appear to have paid off, though, as critical and audience response from the show's first six episodes has been mostly positive. The franchise's built-in fan base has also undoubtedly-helped ensure a large amount of global interest in the series.
Taking place 10 years before the events of the original Star Trek series, Star Trek: Discovery follows a brand new crew on a new ship as they take on missions to discover new worlds and lifeforms during the Federation-Klingon war.
Three episodes remain in the first chapter of Season 1, with the remaining six episodes slated to air early next year. As for Season 2, a time frame has yet to be set, though early-to-mid 2019 appears a likely scenario for its return.

I like all of the Trek shows - even Enterprise. I like this show very much and I'm glad to read that it has been renewed. I'm three episodes into the season and I like the twists and turns the narrative has taken. The effects are surprisingly good and I'm all in to see more! As far as paying for CBS All Access to see the show .... there are ways around every rule.

CBS All Access isn't going anywhere, you can grumble all you want, not everyone expects everything to be free, and its $6.00 a month. ABC will follow CBS in the streaming business, you going to whine about that too Freeloaders.

I'm paying for Hulu, Netflix, Amazon prime (comes with free 2 day shipping on all Amazon products which rules), I'm paying for HBO Go, and Sling. I get everything I want and it cost a third of what I paid for direct tv. Cut the cord, what year do you think it is? My shows never get the end cut off and I never worry a show won't get recorded. As well as never dealing with commercials except 1% of the time.

I am paying for Cable. I am paying for NetFlix. I am paying for Amazon Prime. CBS is out of its mind if they think I am paying for another service to watch one single PC version of Star Trek.

I've been waiting ... for what 10 years? for the next iteration of Star Trek. But I won't add to my cable bill as I already pay too much. So far, I don't stream anything except Espn over the internet ... but if I wanted to see this bad enough ... but I don't.
whatttt - this series is takes place ten years before the original Star Trek! I thought they already did that and it was the last series that aired. What gives? A remake? Oh I guess that last series was (much) more than ten years earlier.

I think JJ has this show confused with Seth Mscfarlane's cheap OBVIOUS rip-off "The Orville" which is just a left-wing propaganda machine and really quite horrible. Star Trek Discovery is actually quite good and well worth the watch... of course I'm NEVER paying CBS for television....but.. for the wise.. there are many ways to see this without CBS All Access. I haven't missed an episode yet. - If CBS had any balls they'd schedule this opposite the Orville and watch how they dominated that time slot.

I like this show, more than I expected to, so I am very glad to see this continue to a 2nd season.
@Bonkers, you do realize there are millions of trekkies out there, I'm sure your friend base, though it may be strong, cannot remotely be viewed as a good enough size pool to go off of. For example, how many of your friends play Star Trek online games in any of the forms they are out right now? And if they do, what ones and how do they like them?
@Mac I agree, I am disgusted with CBS as well, and although I watch this, I do not pay them, I use my husbands account, which he got free through this offer someplace. If it wasn't for that, I would not be able to watch it, and that would suck.
Hopefully they will put out reruns on normal TV, if they were smart they would do that over the summer, at the very least they may pull in more people who would subscribe because they enjoy the show.

I actually really like the show. Been a trek fan since the movies even before TNG first aired. It's different but I enjoy it for what it is.

Please DO NOT refer to this show as part of the "storied" Star Trek franchise. This show is an abomination of Political Correctness. I am guessing those who watch this disaster have never seen what Gene Roddenberry created. The writing is weak as well as the acting. The best part of Star Trek was the interpersonal relationships of the main characters and the manner in which Roddenberry used allegory to represent societal differences. The main character of this show is totally unlikable, and not in a good way. Walter White from Breaking Bad was nefarious but likable.
